About the Artist
Mary Gene Sykes is a painter based in Savannah, Georgia, whose work is rooted in the landscapes, architecture, and quiet daily poetry of the coastal South. Working primarily in oil, watercolor, and acrylic, she returns again and again to the salt marshes, live oaks, and historic streetscapes that define her home.
Her process is slow and observational. Many paintings begin with weeks of sketches and plein-air studies before ever touching canvas. The result is work that feels lived-in — atmospheric, grounded, and specific to a particular place and season.
Mary Jean studied fine art at the Savannah College of Art and Design and has exhibited throughout the Southeast. Her work is held in private collections across the United States.
